Gable & Spandrel Panels
Here's our guide to gable and spandrel panels, revolutionising UK construction with bespoke, precision-crafted solutions. Designed for efficiency, these prefabricated marvels deliver faster builds, superior performance, and compliance.
Why It's Important
Gable and Spandrel Panels in UK Construction
In today’s modern construction landscape, gable and spandrel panels offer a more innovative, faster, and more efficient way to build. Acorn Timber Engineering manufacture and supply gable and spandrel panels for construction projects across the UK.
Whether you’re a developer, architect, or homeowner looking to understand the components behind a high-performance building envelope, this guide explains what these panels are and why they matter.
Gable and spandrel panels act as a modern alternative to traditional blockwork walls in loft spaces. Designed using site-specific data provided by the building designer, they are manufactured in accordance with guidance from the Trussed Rafter Association (TRA).
Accelerate Your Construction Process
What Are Gable Panels?
Located on the gable ends of a house, gable panels typically comprise of:
- 9mm OSB 3 board
- A breather membrane
- A 47mm x 97mm gang nail-plated timber frame
These panels accelerate the construction process by allowing the building envelope to be completed in one stage alongside the installation of the main roof trusses. They are also structurally engineered to withstand wind loads specific to the site specified by the building designer.
60-Minute Fire Resistance Rating
What Are Spandrel Panels?
Spandrel panels are used on party walls between adjoining properties. They consist of:
- A 47mm x 72mm gang nail-plated timber frame
- 15mm fire-tested Fermacell gypsum fibreboard cladding to both faces
This construction provides a 60-minute fire resistance rating, tested to BS 476: Part 22: 1987. When constructed with Fermacell, spandrel panels are also compatible with Robust Detail wall systems, helping to meet Part E sound insulation requirements.
